ASTM F1306 - Standard Test Method for Slow Rate Penetration Resistance of Flexible Barrier Films and Laminates
Overview
Puncture testing is essential for plastic film manufacturers to evaluate the durability of packaging materials. High-performance barrier films must resist puncture forces while maintaining optimal tensile strength and material integrity. As manufacturers strive to reduce raw material costs through lean manufacturing techniques like Six Sigma, they seek to minimize film thickness without compromising puncture resistance.
Test Geometry & Sample Preparation
To ensure repeatable and consistent results, films are typically tested at a standard thickness of approximately 2.5 microns, though this may vary based on material specifications. The most commonly used sample size is 2x2 inches, but this can be adjusted depending on the dimensions of the puncture fixture. Our standard puncture fixture is designed for a 35mm opening.
The puncture probe size is also a critical factor, as it must be selected based on the film’s elasticity and strength. The test requires complete puncture penetration for accurate force and energy measurements.
Optimized Puncture Testing Solutions
Various puncture fixture designs and probe configurations exist, and selecting the right combination is crucial for ASTM F1306 compliance. The diameter of the fixture opening relative to the puncture plunger is a key specification in determining puncture resistance.
For this setup:
-
Hole opening diameter: 34.9mm
-
Puncture plunger radius: 1.6mm
The fixture is universally compatible with most testing systems via clevis pin-style adapters. It features a 5/8-inch female coupling with a 5/16-inch locking mechanism, allowing seamless integration with universal testing machines. Universal Grip recommends the Quasar series from Galdabini for precise puncture testing.
Puncture Test Data & Analysis
Puncture resistance is quantified through key measurements:
✅ Force to Break – The peak force required to puncture the film.
✅ Energy to Break – The total energy absorbed before rupture, calculated using displacement data.
✅ Variability & Deviation Analysis – Statistical breakdown of performance inconsistencies across multiple tests and specimens.

The Galdabini Universal Testing Machine, or the Mark-10 Tensile Testing Machine when paired with this ASTM F1306 fixture, provides accurate, repeatable results, making it a reliable solution for packaging quality control and material research.
