ASTM C1341
Flexural Test on Fiber Reinforced Ceramic Composites
Theory:
ASTM C1341 covers a flexural test for specific types of ceramic composites. The sampe is bent to about 5% strain and the load is taken. There are three versions of this test. The first is a 3 poinit bend test using center loading. The other two tests use a 4 point bend fixture and use a top span of either 1/2 or 1/3 Lo.
Geometry:
Rectangular plates are cut according to the measurements. Length, thickness, and width must all be measured and recorded for each sample.
Solution:
Universal Grip recommends using a bend fixture with articulating supports. Ceramic Composites can be brittle and therefore supports with a slight amount of pivot should be used.
Analysis:
There are several measurement and calculations which can be taken including:
- Modulus of Elasticity (MOE)
- Modulus of Rupture (MOR) also known as flexural strength
